Feldenkrais ®
Young or old, physically challenged or physically fit,
Feldenkrais® benefits anyone wishing to move and
live more comfortably. It also is ideal for those individuals
who experience restricted movement, chronic pain, psychological
or neurological problems.
|
Our students often experience the following benefits:
• Ease chronic pain and discomfort
• Decrease stiffness
• Relieve tension
• Increase mobility
Developed a half-century ago by an Israeli engineer and martial
arts practitioner, Feldenkrais® Awareness Through Movement®
(ATM) classes are group exercise lessons that help participants
access the sensory motor processes of the brain to develop
awareness of our bodies, flexibility and coordination.
During Feldenkrais lessons, we guide students through simple
movement sequences while they are standing, sitting or lying
on the floor, or sitting in a chair. The lessons directly
engage our natural intelligence in a gentle and pleasurable
way. There are hundreds of lessons, addressing every joint
and muscle group in the body and every human function. These
ATM lessons help you become more aware of habitual neuromuscular
patterns and rigidities that limit movement or cause pain.
You'll learn to expand options for movement while increasing
awareness and sensitivity to how your body works.
Special benefits to performing artists and athletes
Performing artists and athletes can become better competitors
and performers through learning and practice of Awareness
Through Movement. Here are some benefits to these specialized
groups:
• Develop better posture and alignment
• Boost performance and avoid injuries
• Increase balance and coordination
• Enhance brain function
• Improve fine motor skills
The Feldenkrais Method is not only applied through the principles
of Awareness Through Movement, but also through what is called
SugiTouch®. Both access the nervous system's
own innate processes to change and refine functioning.
For information on SugiTouch®, see Bodywork
and Massage.

"Do not push yourself to the point of pain. If you do
that, you will not be learning this lesson. You will be learning
something different. You will be learning to endure suffering."
